Sarah Rothberg's solo exhibition SUPERPROMPT opened at bitforms gallery in San Francisco, featuring the artist's latest series of work around language: both verbal and processed, human and machine. We helped produced the prints that went into this exhibit; captures and images taken from Rothberg's Portraits of Sophie that appear as non-repeatable moments with the AI avatar in the overarching interactive experience.
Sarah's palette is bright, colorful, and stylized; reflective of the dream-like virtual environments she creates to experience. Most of her captures look like they've been filtered through a hazy screen, and characters are warped as if to emulate the static and wave interference that would affect an old TV. We printed Sarah's print suite on Hahnemühle German Etching, its textured surface acting as a great host for these images to push their overall effect. As there were other works in the show of various media, such as moving picture, videos, and sound, that all had this dreamy quality to them, the prints were produced to fit seamlessly into the overall aesthetic of the exhibition.
SUPERPROMPT looks at the way speech and communication has changed through the increased use of technology. Shared discourse, spaces, and ideas between people, are often mediated by the presence of technology in some way. In order to humanize and investigate this, Sarah's creation of the AI avatar named Sophie, acts as a guiding tool to frame various instances of interactions throughout the show.
